Upcycling
A little different than repurposing, upcycling is converting forgotten items and furniture into something creative and utilitarian. Dismantling them and using several pieces to build something truly one of a kind. Inspiring us to scout for salvage and vintage pieces with a story.

These are exceptional; I can see these for merchants, restaurants as well as home.

A wine barrel tub, Great for outdoors too.

Vintage wash stands; porch balusters and doors make these gorgeous benches.

Recognize these? Hint, as a baby we all slept in one.

My design tip: IF you have a sentimental piece but you don’t like the style, upcycle it. The history will still be there. Loving it is using it.
Enjoy a beautiful weekend.

Appreciating Vintage Hardware
When I see an old door with it’s original hardware I almost feel honored. Touching details that have endured a hundred years or more is so amazing. Thinking of the people who have used the handles going in and out, what where their lives like etc.  Antique hardware has me wondering how they acquired the tools back then to make such intricate pieces. So much attention to simple function though made in such a beautiful way.

Knobs, locks, skeleton keys and doorbells. Everyday parts that were created like pieces of art.

When you’re out and about and you happen to see hardware like this, take a moment to appreciate the intricate work that has endured all. Honestly I scout for doors and windows just for the hardware. I incorporate them in my renovation projects.

My design tip: Use vintage hardware when you can.  A new door can be uniquely enhanced with history.

A beautiful weekend to you.

Hello November
Welcoming November is bittersweet.  Autumn’s end is near and the holidays will soon take over. Time is precious; as we turn our clocks back on the west coast our days will hurry by. The season to gather and give Thanks is upon us. Now is the time to take inventory and organize for the season. What vintage items will inspire your home decor, so you can begin to create your favorite place this November?

A personal touch to baking is so appealing and memorable.

Sharing sentiments of the heart, great for all ages.

My design tip: Organize your tableware items, clean the silver, fold napkins, gather candles, vases etc. Store everything you’ll need in a big basket or trunk. Time saving and you won’t forget to use your favorite treasures.

Welcome November!

Elements for Cozy Weekends

Weekends are my favorite, around our home. Somehow it feels like are time is less structured so we aren’t watching the time so closely, we are more engaged in really enjoying the moments. Though the to-do list is long during the day, it’s the evenings we look forward to having those long dinners by the fire. Lounging in the mornings a little longer is lovely too. Baking with new recipes to try out on the family. Cozy elements inspire our spaces and encourage us to embrace the time we spend relaxing in them.

Happy Halloween, forgot your broom~

My design tip: Dim lights, use candles, and bring out the soft textures. Let your senses guide your ideas of a cozy space.

October’s Hush

Interesting that October is called the “hush before winter”. It really is…
The leaves quietly turn beautifully then fall to the ground blanketing it in preparation of winter.

We begin to blanket ourselves in Autumns cozy fashions and our homes with textures that connect us to nature. A welcoming sprig of berries, wreaths and pumpkins inspire the beginning of the October. Dinners into the crisp evenings outdoors are surely to be relaxing and memorable.

Shop our Italian Dinnerware

My design tip: Gather your vintage adornments. Layer your clothing, your home and your outdoor dining spaces with cozy textures in natural shades.
Layer your spirit with the hush of October.

Plate Racks

Displaying a set of vintage or heirloom plates in a plate rack a way to add something useful and artistic. When our collections get stacked in a hutch behind doors we aren’t able to appreciate their beauty any time we wish. So if there were no upper cabinets in our kitchens I know we could get pretty creative with are dish ware! Here are two styles we most often see. You choose what your preference would be!

Here is one at Second Shout Out - It's 18th century Italian antique plate rack with a storage area to the side. It was painted at one point with black paint. This is large and slots would have been used for larger plates or even platters. It has a very nice rustic or primitive look. We have shown it with our Fresco Collection serving bowls and platters that are also for sale at Second Shout Out.

Primitive Antique Storage Plate Rack  & Fresco Dinnerware

Mixing cups and bowls, even throwing a little piece of art work on there would be charming.

My design tip: Plate racks are useful storage. Adding charm with dish ware in a kitchen is very welcoming can make any space feel cozy.

A beautiful Autumn weekend to you.

DIY REPURPOSING
Something about Autumn has us nesting about, getting cozy and preparing for more entertaining at home. Thoughts wonder a little about gifting and the holidays. Opting to use things we already have in a new way is very eco friendly. It’s cool to find a new purpose for something vintage. We are loving something all over again in a creative new way.

We love candles. Turning vintage oilcans upside down, vintage cheese graters over a lit candle are a couple of ways to see the pretty glow indoors or out. This would work with battery-operated lights as well under the graters.

Vintage sweaters made from cable knits, cashmere, cotton, wool etc. Easy to craft one of a kind pillows from the body, cuffs and waist bands for cups, candles, sleeves for bottles and vases. Add vintage embellishments and you have something truly special for your space or gifts. Use that vintage sweater your grandma gave you or the vintage one you’ve been eyeing, but it’s really not your size!

A vintage equestrian bridle. Repurposing this as a towel holder for guest towel or bar towel would be unique.

A wood wire spool, a cool vintage find, wondering how to use it? This is a piece that needs to be able to move. Installing 3 industrial wheels would be perfect. Adding a cushion for seating made with vintage grain sacks would be awesome. Raising it on legs would work well for a small bar paired with vintage stools.

My Design tip: Think about vintage pieces with new ideas for use. Be creative, if something has a story hang on to it and you will find a way to enjoy it a second time.

A beautiful Autumn weekend to you!

Reclaimed Wood Does A World Good

Have you really noticed the beauty in a solid piece of wood? Today we have access to some gorgeous reclaimed pieces. Utilizing reclaimed wood in our decor for flooring, furniture and architectural statements gives them a second life. One of a kind natural element that pare well with any style decor. In celebrating Autumn, it’s time to think about nature. Salvaging what is before us has never been more beautiful. Infuse some reclaimed gorgeous pieces into your home, renovations and artfully display them in retail spaces. Let’s get inspired!

My design tip: Reclaimed wood offers warmth to a space that no other product can. It’s good for us, no harmful chemicals, just beauty and it does the world good, to waste not.
A beautiful Autumn weekend for cleaning out the garage and starting a new project!

Autumn Foyers, Organic Styling

Beginning to feel the season change? Without peaking at a calendar, it would be fun to try and guess the month it was. Only relying on our senses and instinct. Something to ponder as were tidying up our foyers, organizing our Autumn accessories with vintage decor.

Autumn’s more about textures and natural elements, pairing them implies coziness.

Oh, Happy back to school!

My design tip: Changing the foyer around seasonally helps to get us in the moment and it’s refreshing to come home to.
Happy Autumn, enjoy a beautiful weekend.

Labor Day
We know it’s a three-day weekend, a school holiday and lots of fun. Also we’re book marking the last weekend of summer.
Let’s raise our flags, wear something cool that’s vintage and relax and savor the next three days.

The last summer mornings in the kitchen.

A cup of tea in the comfiest vintage tattered chairs that just became perfect.

Long afternoon baths after a day on the water or working in the garden.

Lounging at home with the open summer breeze coming in the windows and door.

Enjoy the last breezes of summer as they leave us with memorable days to reflect upon.

My Design tip: Weekends are made for vintage living, for putting your feet up, relaxing & enjoying our spaces. Vintage living is comfy & easy on a budget.

Labor day: The first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The efforts to work together for the strength of our country.

Warmest wishes for a safe and fun last weekend of summer.
