Second Shout Out

James Balston photographed the wonderful new Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam. The buildings, were converted from six 17th and 18th century houses, lining Herrengracht, one of the city’s principal canals. The hotel’s design has been implemented by GA Design International with great panache. From the moment you step into the white, marble floored lobby, it was clear to him that the designers had created spaces, mixing the old and new, that was going to be a joy to photograph.

We treasure things that are made by time,” says Axel Vervoordt, offering as good a summary as you’ll get of the antiques dealer and interior designer’s celebrated style—which favors muted tones, weathered surfaces, richly patinated antiques, and a mix of ancient and modern artworks that share abstract, universal qualities. Among the world’s most influential tastemakers, Vervoordt is fond of sagelike aphorisms. Another one: “There are no rules to what we do—it comes from the heart.”

White is a popular color to design with but what if you took it to the next level and added a bit of an edge to the décor…
Add brown leather and a bit of basket weave touches…

Do you design in white? How do you give it that edge?

It’s that time of year to shake out the camp blankets, put the canoe in the lake,  open the shutters to let in the summer breeze on the porch and stalk up on smores ingredients because it’s SUMMER time!!  That’s right it’s time to let that inner child out and deck the walls with vintage camp and enjoy the long summer days at your favorite vacation spot.

Just a few more days until Memorial Day weekend and then bring on Summer!

Ciao,
