Timeless Travelers
As we welcome May with the excitement of summer it’s time to think about adventures and travel. Packing up and hitting the road is one of the best ways to see this country. Going to places out of the way and setting up the perfect camp to enjoy the full beauty of it all, is adventurous and charming. To give you some inspiration for a vintage camping vibe I found these for your timeless travels.

Perhaps a day trip is all you need to get out of the office and enjoy your own area.

Camping has and always will be a travel experience for all ages to enjoy.

My design tip: If you’re setting up your first camper, select a theme and build around it. Half the fun is finding vintage pieces for your timeless traveler.

Welcome May; make a picnic and travel safe.

Why we love Cafe’s
Thoughts of a cafe seem to entice us. Perhaps because we know it’s a space that will be well designed and have delicious food. You know the kind, I’m sure.
Sometimes the ambiance is a bit quirky or just so creative we get distracted looking at every detail. Comfy with lots of vintage style. Those are always fun to find. The exterior alone is almost enough.

Check out some of the cafe's I'm fascinated with. This first photo is a cafe in Amsterdam and Second Shout Out sells the Industrial Hanging Lamps shown - we just love them.

My design tip: Take a que from a cafe, translate that welcoming feeling into the place you call home.

Enjoy a beautiful weekend,

xo,

Gail

Ceiling Medallions
More than function, lighting sets the ambiance of a room. Looking up at a ceiling seeing a beautiful medallion enhances the fixture even more. Historical homes sometimes incorporated the medallions as part of the entire ceiling pattern.  A special art, we don’t often see today.  Architectural elements like these vintage medallions are treasures, so if you find any don’t think twice about buying it!  I have a few beauties waiting to be incorporated into my projects. Check out Second Shout Out's beautiful Antique Italian Medallions.

Beautiful as art.

My design tip: Simple lighting can stand out with a ceiling medallion. Drawing the eye to moldings or a coffered ceiling.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend.

Calabria is a peninsula in which the Apennines descend into the sea in the Aspromonte. It is bounded on the north by the Pollino National Park, which it shares with bordering Basilicata. Calabria has 800 km of shoreline; the mountains are never more than 40km from the sea.

But Calabria contains startling natural beauty and spectacular towns that seem to grow out of the craggy mountaintops. It has three national parks: the Pollino in the north, the Sila in the centre and the Aspromonte in the south. It's around 90% hills, but skirted by some 780km of Italy's finest coast (ignore the bits devoured by unappealing holiday camps). Bergamot grows here, and it's the only place in the world where the plants are of sufficient quality to produce the essential oil used in many perfumes and to flavour Earl Grey tea. As in Puglia, there are hundreds of music and food festivals here year-round, reaching a fever pitch in July and August.

Admittedly, you sometimes feel as if you have stepped into a 1970s postcard, as its towns, destroyed by repeated earthquakes, are often surrounded by brutal breeze-block suburbs. The region has suffered from the unhealthy miscegenation between European and government subsidies (aimed to develop the south) and dark Mafia opportunism. Half-finished houses often mask well-furnished flats where families live happily, untroubled by invasive house taxes.

This is where to head for an adventure into the unknown.

Vintage Spaces
The spaces we live in are inspired by our individual tastes, surroundings and our climate.  The one common old thorn in the side, is the budget. The advantage of any budget is we can become quite clever and creative with the means we have.
Personally I live resourceful and all my projects have a tight budget. It’s all about the squeeze to get things in, that where the fun begins. Vintage living fits beautifully with those criteria. See if you can spot all the vintage elements in these spaces! Check out SSO vintage furniture and vintage accents to get the looks below.

My design tip: Vintage items if purchased at a fair value will not only retain their value but possibly may appreciate over time. Be sure to care for them properly.

A beautiful Spring weekend to you!

Easter
A little delightful inspiration for decorating your Spring home and entertaining family and friends.

My design tip: Lighten up spaces with fresh linens, removing anything that seems heavy.

Enjoy all that Spring will bring… Happy Easter.

The Writer
When you imagine some of our grandest writers, what kind of desk or table would you pair them with? A writing desk is personal, you can add your own style with unique vintage accessories that inspire. Thoughts become profound, clearly expressing them from such a personal place is a lot more interesting and fun.

Shop Second Shout Out's Antique and Vintage Desks.

This desk is in Charles Dickens’ London study. It is where he did most of his writing. It can be seen in the writer’s home/museum.

My design tip: A writing desk is for creating; a home office desk is for paying the bills and keeping files.

Have a beautiful last weekend, farewell to March.

The Coveted Collection
Where do the things we collect end up?  It’s pretty rare we find a heart shaped rock on a hike, or a perfect sand dollar washed in from the sea.  Those are moments we covet. Do you set them on the mantle until it’s cleaning day, then lay them in a drawer never to be seen again until you move? Here’s some cool display ideas I curated that might inspire you to keep collecting and cherish those precious finds.

My design tip: Collections can be mixing two things together, for example the vintage wood shelves with items from the sea.

Enjoy a beautiful weekend,
